On the Rocks

By Roberto Bianco

The Greek islands are among the most beautiful tourist destinations in the Mediterranean Sea due to their beauty and the millenary history they can tell.
On the other hand, the area between Greece and Turkey is also one of the most active in the world from a geological point of view. In fact, the area represents the Aegean continental margin, along which the African tectonic plate plunges under the Aegean microplate at a speed of about 30 mm / year. This movement, called subduction, gives rise to eruptive events and earthquakes even of extreme force, such as the historic eruption of Santorini which 3600 years ago led to the collapse of the Minoan civilization, or the frequent superficial and high-magnitude seismic events in the Peloponnese, in Crete and in the Dodecanese archipelago.
This video tells of a holiday right in the southernmost islands of the Dodecanese starting from Rhodes, the south-eastern end of the sedimentary Hellenic arch that straddles the subduction of the African plate. From Rhodes the journey continues up the Aegean edge with a stop in Tilos until we reach Nisyros, one of the still active volcanic islands of the Aegean magmatic arc and on whose beaches our story ends.
Continuing northwards, we can meet Kos and the other islands of the Dodecanese which, parallel to the Turkish west coast, emerge in the Aegean Sea, the back-arc basin, until reaching the southern coasts of mainland Greece, the extremity of the Aegean continental margin, but it will be for the next vacation ...
